We started working in Lancashire in 1983, delivering environmental and community programmes to regenerate local communities and improve the lives of the people that live there. Over the years we have increased the range of services that we offer to not only support local communities but businesses and organisations in both the public and private sector.
In June 2013, Newground became a member of the Together Housing Group, a leading provider of quality affordable and modern homes for rent across the North of England. The group’s shared vision is ‘to make a better future, together’. This business move reflects both our growth geographically and the increased range of services that we offer.
Newground is accredited to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 ensuring we deliver quality services in a safe and sustainable way.
Our company consists of a registered charity, Newground Together, and a wholly owned subsidiary, Newground (a Community Interest Company, or social enterprise). The services we provide are delivered through Newground and any profits made are reinvested back into the charity Newground Together. Both the Charity and the Community Interest Company are members of the Together Housing Group.
We believe in the power of social enterprise as a strategy for change. Through our social enterprise model, we deliver professional services in a competitive marketplace. But there’s one key difference between Newground and our private sector competitors. Instead of our profits going to shareholders, they are instead gift aided into our Newground Together and distributed in the form of grants to environmental and community projects. By choosing Newground, our customers are helping to drive positive social and environmental impact.
Health, safety, environmental and quality management are now key areas for any organisation to address and our services are tailored to help businesses maintain legal compliance, improve their environmental performance and save money. In fact, in just one year, we supported 136 businesses to become more resource efficient and reduce their CO2e emissions by 4415 tonnes, equivalent to 26,490 double-decker buses!
We offer a full range of professional landscape design, build and maintenance services for our clients. We also offer training and work experience opportunities for unemployed people through a number of work programmes. We are committed to using recycled content materials in our projects where feasible and with the help of our clients. For example, 94% of the 21km (equivalent to the distance of a half marathon) of new fencing installed as part of our New Boundaries project is recycled plastic manufactured from coat hangers, CD cases, polystyrene and bottle tops.
Our work in communities is at the heart of everything we do. We listen to local people’s concerns and hopes for their families and the places where they live, then support them to genuinely make a difference. We deliver a wide programme of support and activities including: youth engagement, family support, health projects, food growing, citizenship work, environmental education, skills training and apprenticeships. Last year Newground's education team enthused more than 3,000 young people across Pennine Lancashire about the environment and the outdoors.
