Cribden House School, Rawtenstall
Following on from Newground's education team involvement with Forest School sessions at Cribden House School, the design team were asked to develop a masterplan and funding strategy for the school grounds. Cribden House is surrounded by mature woodland and to make the most of this an outdoor education facility, a network of paths, seating circles and a fantastic timber cladded woodland teaching pod were designed.
Newground 's landscape architects helped the school successfully apply for funding and planning approval, and the project was built on site over the summer holidays. The school are now having forest school activities in the woods daily and external groups come and use the grounds after school and at weekends. The local mayor attended the opening celebration where pupils were roasting marshmallows on camp fires and whittling wood.
"Newground enabled us to achieve our vision of a network of paths, widely accessible, safe grounds for our children to explore and an outdoor classroom set in a woodland location.
We are educationalists and we know what we want our children to learn and have access to in order to meet their needs but we are not planners, architects or landscapers.
The wide range of skills and knowledge that Newground could provide was invaluable in advising and supporting us to meet our aims and complete a project which was the best possible design for the needs of our children and the local community," Siobhan Halligan, Cribden House School.
