Greening Audley Schools, Blackburn
The idea for an outdoor inter-schools collaborative project in the Audley area of Blackburn was first hatched in 2013 and supported by Newground and the two other schools, Audley Junior Primary submitted a bid to the Lancashire Telegraph Big 250K Lottery Fund Community Cash Awards.
This resulted in 3 schools having lovely new improvements to their school grounds, with 3 different types of sites developed.
Audley Junior School had their pond and grassland areas improved and revamped, St Thomas’ CE Primary had a Forest school site developed in their woodland and St Matthews CE Primary had a fantastic new garden/allotment area with raised beds paths and a Swiss chalet-style shed which can double as an outdoor learning space. All 3 schools are within walking distance of each other and can potentially get the benefit of the three different sites by sharing use with each other.
After the sites were developed, Newground delivered a series of educational sessions for children at each of the three sites during spring and summer 2015.
The schools have also benefitted from ongoing support from Newground, with support in gaining their Eco Schools awards in 2015/2016 and bulb planting as part of the National Lottery ‘Bees beyond the Borough Project’ in Autumn 2016, so will hopefully see a colourful display of Bee friendly bulbs on each site this spring.
