Longsands Community Green, Preston

The Longsands Community Association had been working hard on improving the green since 2005. Preston City Council assisted the group and Newground won the tender for the design and build of the green, with work commencing in July 2014.

Previously, the green (formerly a landfill site) was inaccessible, due to a series of old eroded paths. The completed design allows for a full access along a perimeter circuit around the green and to the new ballcourt. Excavations were re-used on site as landscaped grass mounds, which add a new dimension to the topography of the space and creates an informal play feature.

Boulders, balancing logs, carved timber seats and some small pieces of timber play equipment were interspersed in a linear formation adjacent to the path to allow children to play whilst their families walk around the green, and the aesthetic appeal of the site has improved dramatically.
