Newground help Liam get back on track
Liam is 20 years old, he’s claimed Universal Credit since July 2016 and like many other people his age, he’s never felt further away from the job market. Until he found More Positive Together, a European Social Fund Project delivered by Newground helping people to improve their skills and employment prospects.
Before Liam discovered More Positive Together, he suffered with depression and was lacking in confidence. Although he was keen to find work, he felt his lack of English qualification was a huge barrier.
When Liam met with Kus, his Job Centre Plus Work Coach, in April 2018 he was immediately referred to Newground for one-to-one support. Newground supported Liam to attend an English assessment at the Adult Learning Centre, where he has successfully completed his English Level 1 Diploma and is now on track to complete his Level 2 Diploma.
Achieving these diplomas is something Liam never knew he was capable of, but with the right support he made a fantastic achievement which has helped him to boost his confidence.
Since then, Liam has continued to attend regular meetings with the Job Centre Plus and Newground which have enabled him to develop his confidence and skills. Liam was recognised as having excellent Digital Skills and has since been connected with the IT Reach Digital Inclusion Project run by Citizens Advice Bureau, where he now uses his skills as a Digital Champion to offer one-to-one digital support for others.
Liam attended IT Reach Digital Champion training, and with additional support from Job Centre Plus staff, he is now able to offer support and mentoring weekly at the Job Centre Plus and his local library, helping others to prepare for Universal Credit Full Service.
As the search for employment continues, Newground have supported Liam to develop his CV, job applications and interview techniques. The hard work is beginning to pay off as Liam has landed himself two fantastic job interviews with Together Housing for an Administration Apprenticeship and a Sales and Marketing Appreticeship.
Helen Brayshaw, Community Employment Advisor at Newground, said: “All of the team at Newground are so proud of Liam and how far he has come in such a short space of time. His regular work with our team here at Newground and IT Reach has really allowed Liam to build his trust and confidence – which is the key to his success.
“We expect that Liam will be in employment very soon, and until then we will continue to support him on his journey.”
Liam said: “I would really like to thank Helen and Kus, who have been so supportive of me at a time when I needed it most. Without Helen and Kus’ encouragement, I would never have realised I had the confidence and digital skills to help others.
“My family and friends have noticed a positive change in my behaviour and everyone is very excited about what my future holds. It will be my 21st birthday very soon and the best present for me would be to get a job and be able to help my family financially.”
