Pinington (Environmental Management System Implementation)

The challenge

Pinington is one of the North West’s leading construction and building service companies delivering projects to the public and private sector. It is a family business that has been operating for over 60 years.

Although Pinington recognised that its construction activities had an environmental impact, it only had informal systems in place to manage this. In addition, the Company was under increasing pressure to demonstrate sound environmental management and performance to their existing and potential clients. In order to satisfy this, it wanted to implement an environmental management system with the aim of achieving ISO 14001 certification. Pinington was familiar with management system standards as it already operated a quality management system certified to ISO 9001.

Newground’s approach and solution

We carried out an initial gap analysis to assess Pinington’s current performance against the requirements of the ISO 14001 Standard.

We then designed a bespoke environmental management system to be operated separately from the existing quality management system, at the request of the Company. We supported the key contact at Pinington to develop tailored environmental legal and aspects registers and to develop all of the required processes and procedures to practically manage the Company’s environmental impacts. Newground also acted as the Company’s competent internal EMS auditor.

The implementation process was done as a coaching exercise, with the Newground Consultant spending time on site with the contact, at regular intervals, to provide him with the relevant knowledge to implement each requirement of the ISO 14001 Standard.

How we made a difference

Pinington now operates an effective environmental management system successfully certified to the ISO 14001 Standard. This has enabled the Company to attract new clients, in addition to improving its environmental performance.
