Newground support Forest School dream
A primary school in Bacup recently received support from Newground to establish a Forest School for their pupils.
Introducing a Forest School is an inspirational process which aims to give pupils regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment with trees.
Sharneyford Primary School reached out to Newground for support and assistance, so that their pupils would be able to benefit from taking part in Forest School programmes. Newground helped the school in finding a suitable Forest School Site, assisting staff members to become Forest School Leaders and running Forest School Programmes.
Newground Senior Education Project Officer Rachel Street supported the school to realise their Forest School dream. Rachel helped the school to secure external funding, as well as supporting them through their process of becoming Forest School accredited so that they can conduct effective Outdoor Learning in school.
Rachel said: “We have been successful in helping every single child at Sharneyford Primary School to benefit from a fantastic outdoor learning experience. By assisting the school to become Forest School accredited we have enabled different children to explore nature and the natural environment and concepts in their own time and in ways which suit them.
“Our activities have included art, physical exercise, stories, mathematics, practical skills, use of tools, creative activities, ideas and knowledge, close observation, listening to and studying wildlife, as well as cooperation and decision making skills which encourage the children to use their initiative.
“The school has benefitted hugely from the training provided as part of the programme, from working alongside our staff at Newground, to experiencing an improved site. Thanks to our support, the school will now be able to continue with Forest School sessions in the future and will be incorporating these into their curriculum planning, which is an amazing result.”
Andrea Holt, Head Teacher at Sharneyford Primary School, said: “The forest school with Rachel has been a huge success from start to finish. All of our pupils have benefitted greatly and they all look forward to the visits.
“Our newly qualified Forest School Leader has shadowed Rachel and this has also impacted on the school in a positive way. Parents have been involved and we are looking forward to carrying on this good work. A huge thanks to Rachel and Newground.”
