Newground supports SIMS Ltd to establish environment and health & safety management systems in line with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 requirements.

SIMS Ltd (Health & Safety and Environmental Management Systems Implementation)

The challenge

Based in the South East of England, with their clients including London Underground, Network Rail and London Overground, SIMS (Signalling Installation & Maintenance Services) Ltd undertakes complete 'turnkey' projects, from the initial conceptual design right through to installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance, as well as supplying IRSE-licensed specialist staff and providing IRSE assessments and training.

SIMS Ltd operates an existing ISO 9001-certified quality management system. The Company’s clients are keen that SIMS can demonstrate that not only are robust quality processes in place but that health and safety and environment issues are also well-managed. A decision was taken to implement formal environmental and health & safety management systems in line with the requirements of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 respectively.

Newground’s approach and solution

We began by reviewing existing environmental and health & safety documentation in place, as well as reviewing quality system documents to see where processes and procedures could be integrated. Where possible we revised quality procedures and templates to include environmental and health & safety requirements, only developing new procedures and forms where necessary, in order to reduce the burden of managing the system once in place.

We developed bespoke environmental and health & safety legal registers that identified all relevant legislation and guided SIMS in assessing legal compliance. In addition, we helped the Company to identify its environmental aspects, develop a scoring methodology to assess aspects for significance and set up a bespoke environmental aspects register. All of this enabled us to provide advice on the setting of relevant objectives and targets and help to produce action plans for how SIMS could achieve the established objectives.

One of the key areas to address was staff awareness and training so we developed sets of bespoke training slides, along with comprehensive trainer notes, that SIMS staff could use to carry out training on topics such as environmental awareness, health & safety awareness, and introductions to both ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

How we made a difference

SIMS Ltd now has formally documented environment and health & safety management systems, integrated where possible with the existing quality system, saving the Company time and resources to manage all the elements in the most streamlined and efficient manner.

The systems are currently undergoing external review with the intention of becoming certified to the ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 Standards. Certification will enable SIMS Ltd to demonstrate its commitment to managing health and safety and environmental risks and improving its performance to clients and other stakeholders.
