A wildlife pond for pupils to enjoy and learn.

The Redeemer School, Darwen

Newground carried out the both the design and build of this project. The school contacted us looking for design ideas for the development of a wildlife wetland area, set within an enclosed boggy section of field situated above the school playground.

Water run-off was directed from the field into a formed pond using stone rills and ditches. The pond is lined with a waterproof factory pre-hydrated sodium bentonite material and then covered with 300mm of topsoil, giving a natural looking appearance from the start. A stone path leads from a secure gate to a recycled plastic boardwalk suitable for dipping when the pond contains water. There are two informal timber benches, an outfall rill and soak-away, with new wetland and native wildlife planting and wildflower seeding.
