Blackburn project wins TV prize

21 March 2017

A Newground Together-backed project has won almost £50,000 from ITV’s People’s Project. Sliding Doors Open for All Project, which runs sessions in Blackburn, was voted as one of three winners in the Granada region.

The group already runs events to support over a hundred people with disabilities and those who are lonely and isolated. Newground Together awarded the project £9,652 to help them run events at Blackburn Rovers’ Blues Bar and shortly at Together Housing’s Gleneagles Court and Shadsworth Hub.

Julie Astley, the project’s founder, said she was delighted to have won the prize. She said: “Winning the People Project has made so many people happy. Until now, Sliding Doors has been a small entirely volunteer-run group. Can you imagine what £49,700 will help us to do? “The reaction when we heard we had been successful was amazing, the room erupted with cheers from at least 100 people, so many happy smiling faces.

“We plan to open a Hub run by people with disabilities for anyone in the local community to drop in and enjoy activities such as Art and Crafts, Bingo, cooking, IT skills etc. It will be a safe, friendly place where everyone will feel welcome. “We will also be running a mobile afternoon tea service, bring tea, cakes and company to older people across the area. This will also be supported by people with disabilities “We’d like to thank everyone who voted for us and Together Housing and Newground Together for all their support.”

Peter Jordan, Newground Together Communities Director, said:

“We’re absolutely delighted that this project has won – it’s thoroughly well deserved! “The additional funding will back-up the grant from Newground Together and be able to help a lot more people. Congratulations to Julie and all the other volunteers!”
