51 young people in South Kirkby came together on Thursday 21st June to take part in The Great Get Together.
The Great Get Together is inspired by Jo Cox, who was killed on 16th June 2016. The Great Get Together aims to bring communities together and celebrate all that unites us. Jo’s family and friends came up with the initiative which has been supported by more than one hundred organisations.
South Kirkby’s Young People’s Great Get Together was a free fun-filled picnic with food, sports activities and arts and crafts. Local young people came together at the Recreational Ground to enjoy sports and games in the sun, with rounders being a particular favourite.
Lucy Spalding, Senior Sustainable Communities Officer, said: “We engaged with a significant number of young people through the Young Persons Great Get Together in South Kirkby. All ages of young people came out to get involved and we were also joined by local community and family members. It was lovely to hold an event where such a wide range of ages could come together in their community to have fun.”
The event was held by Newground, who are part of the Together Housing Group, in partnership with Wakefield Council and Wakefield and District Housing.
