National Play Day 2020

Wednesday 5th August 2020 is National Play Day, which is a day that aims to highlight the importance of giving children and teenagers the freedom to play and enjoy everyday adventures. The theme for 2020 is Everyday Freedoms and Everyday Adventures.

Play is an essential way of developing behaviourally and for young people’s mental health. Play can involve objects or could just be a young person and their imagination!

The current situation means that many public events have been cancelled, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still get involved with playday at home! Below, we have put together some ways you could get involved in Play Day this year:

  • Indoor gardening: You could do some indoor gardening together. For example, you could plant cress in a clear pot in order to watch it grow. You can find out more about how to do that here: http://www.planet-science.com/categories/under-11s/our-world/2011/07/grow-a-cress-head!.aspx
  • Arts and crafts: You could finger paint or create cards out of paper for family and friends. The options are unlimited and you can let your imagination run wild!
  • Garden rocks: You could find rocks and pebbles to paint together! These could be displayed in your home or your garden. You may even want to paint pebbles for other people to enjoy by placing your painted pebbles on the side of public footpaths for others to find!
  • Play a board game: You could play boards games! Either one you already own or you can find them in charity shops or online. You could even be really creative and create one of your own!
  • Build a fort: This could be made out of two chairs with a sheet pulled over them to make a tiny tent. Or you could make a fort out of a large cardboard box. Then the options with a fort are endless! You could play pretend or read a book and watch a move in it.
