From Africa to Halifax
Originally from Eritrea in Africa, Omer Salih came to England in December 2014. He stayed in London until August 2017 before travelling to Halifax where he met employment adviser Richard from Works Better.
In November 2017 Omer signed up with Works Better programme. In Eritrea, he worked as a lab technician but understood that it would be difficult to enter that line of work again in the UK. Omer was really motivated to find a job so that he could provide for his family. Richard spent time listening and learning about Omer’s experience and skills.
Richard quickly identified that Omer had a lack of understanding around how to apply and market himself in the UK labour market. With this awareness, Richard and the Works Better team set-up a training course called ‘Jobs in the UK’ and invited a number of non-native speakers to give them skills and knowledge on how to present themselves to the UK job market. Following on from Jobs in the UK, Omer was invited to a level 1 Health and Safety course.
Richard said: ‘’Omer was enthusiastic and he really applied himself to both courses. It reinforced my confidence in Omer’s ability to learn and I could clearly see his motivation and enthusiasm to do well.”
Richard updated Omer’s CV and discussed the techniques he had learnt from the Jobs in the UK course so that he was ready to start applying for jobs. Omer immediately started applying for jobs.
Omer soon secured a job at a waste recycling centre as a factory operative. His role involves unloading and offloading recycled waste, cleaning and maintaining the factory. Whilst this wasn’t Omer’s first choice of a job he was glad to have this opportunity.
Omer added: ‘’I’m thankful to Richard for all the help he’s given me over the past couple of months and I’m excited to see what the future holds for me.’’
Works Better will continue to support Omer over the next six months and look to help Omer find a role as a lab technician if he chooses this.
